Taxi Signs - how we recognize we use a licensed Hackney Carriage

All hackney carriages are required to display an illuminated TAXI sign. On licensed cars the sign is fitted on the roof and the word "crawley taxi" is visible from the front of the vehicle. Every vehicle has a licence number and this number is displayed on the roof sign, door sign, internal plate inside windscreen and external plate on rear of vehicle

The London type and some other purpose built taxis have a taxi sign set into the front of the vehicle above the windscreen. During hours of darkness all taxi signs are illuminated when the vehicles are available for hire.

Licence Display and Hailing a Taxi

All taxis have to display a white licence plate fixed to the rear of the vehicle to show the licence number and the number of passengers that vehicle is allowed to carry. Some vehicles are wheelchair accessible and the plate on the rear of the vehicle will display a sign that shows the vehicle is wheelchair accessible.

Taxis can be hailed (flagged down) directly from the street or hired from taxi ranks within the Borough of Crawley.

The Cost of Hiring a Taxi

All taxis are fitted with fare meters which must be used for every journey within Crawley. Fare levels are fixed for all vehicles by the council and the current Council issued tariff card must be displayed in a clearly visible position at all times.

Passengers should refer to the fare chart to see if the correct fare is being charged. The meters are checked for accuracy by the Council.
